Delta Hoofddorp took its environmental commitment a step further on March 11th, partnering with M.E.E.RGroen for a seedling rescue initiative that highlights the importance of supporting biodiversity and caring for our natural landscapes. The initiative reflects a simple truth: in nature, not all trees get the chance to grow—even when the soil is rich.

In the densely wooded area of Vijfhuizen, a multitude of young trees were quietly struggling beneath the shade of mature giants. Their roots, light-starved and nutrient-deficient, faced a harsh reality—without space to thrive, these seedlings would never reach their potential.

Rather than let them be lost to overcrowded conditions, the initiative focused on ecological renewal. The seedlings were carefully harvested and relocated to Cruquius Museum, where open space and healthier soil now offer them the opportunity to grow, strengthen, and contribute to a more balanced landscape.

Delta colleagues played an active role in this mission. Equipped with shovels and guided by a shared sense of purpose, they worked alongside experts from M.E.E.RGroen, who provided hands-on instruction on identifying which seedlings required harvesting and how to carefully extract them without damaging their delicate root systems. With this guidance, the team began methodically unearthing each seedling, ensuring its roots remained intact. Following the organization’s direction, more than 1000 seedlings were then sorted by species and prepared for relocation to a more suitable environment. At their new home, Cruquius Museum, the trees were thoughtfully replanted by colleagues and spaced to support long-term growth. These efforts offer the young trees not just a chance to survive—but to truly flourish.
